SENTINELS IN THE STORM | Iceland's famous black sand beaches are beautiful from a distance, but on days like this they remind visitors who's in charge. Powerful winds swept across the shoreline, lifting volcanic sand into the air and turning a simple walk into an exercise in endurance.The sea stacks of Reynisdrangar emerged through the mist as waves crashed against the coast and blowing sand stung exposed skin. The conditions were harsh, even punishing, yet undeniably captivating. It was a vivid reminder that Iceland's beauty is often inseparable from the raw forces that shape it.

SILENT PASSAGE | **POWDERED WINTER**A light dusting of snow transformed this rugged Icelandic canyon into something almost ethereal. What only days before had been dark volcanic rock now appeared delicately coated in white, as though nature had sifted powdered sugar across every ledge, ridge, and spire.The contrast was mesmerizing. The turquoise river winding through the canyon seemed even more vibrant against the muted winter palette, carving its way through a landscape that felt both ancient and impossibly fragile. Every cliff face revealed new textures, softened by snow yet still shaped by centuries of wind, water, and volcanic forces.What struck me most was the sense of impermanence. SIDE BY SIDE | Puffins often seem almost too colorful to be real. With their bright orange bills, expressive faces, and unmistakable personalities, they bring a sense of charm and character to even the most rugged northern landscapes. Yet what struck me most about this scene was not their appearance, but their companionship.
SHARED HORIZON | This image was made moments after another photograph of the same pair of puffins, yet a subtle change in composition transforms the feeling entirely. By allowing more space around the birds, the scene becomes less about the puffins themselves and more about their place within the vast Arctic landscape.
ALMOST AIRBORNE | One of the joys of photographing puffins is that their personalities seem far larger than their size. They spend much of their time standing calmly on coastal cliffs and rocky outcrops, appearing almost contemplative. Then, without warning, everything changes.
WAITING TOGETHER | The Arctic is often imagined as a place of movement. Wind sweeping across the tundra, waves crashing against remote shores, and seabirds constantly in flight. Yet some of its most memorable moments are defined by stillness.
THE LOOKOUT | Puffins are often photographed in groups, gathered along crowded cliffs where the noise and activity never seem to stop. This bird chose a different stage.
THE PAUSE BEFORE FLIGHT | There is something almost regal about a puffin when it finds the highest point available and simply settles in. No movement, no urgency, no apparent purpose beyond observing the world around it.
A MOMENT TO CONSIDER | Wildlife photography often rewards patience, but occasionally it rewards persistence. As the other puffins gradually departed their rocky perches and disappeared into the Arctic sky, this lone bird remained behind.
AGAINST THE MOUNTAIN | Some wildlife encounters are memorable because of the animal. Others are memorable because of where the animal chooses to be.
FROZEN CONSTELLATION | One of the most fascinating winter phenomena in the Canadian Rockies occurs beneath the frozen surface of Abraham Lake. As organic material on the lakebed decomposes, it releases methane gas that rises toward the surface. When winter temperatures arrive, the lake freezes layer by layer, trapping the bubbles in place before they can escape.
TRAPPED BREATH | Part of the magic of Abraham Lake lies in the discoveries that appear beneath your feet. While many visitors focus on the sweeping mountain views, I often found myself looking down, searching the ice for unusual patterns created by trapped methane bubbles.
